I still need a much steadier hand and the wind didn’t help my cause any today, but I love getting reeeeal close! I even tried it with my 85 mm (the second group of blue images). That effect was a bit different, but still cool.

Today belongs to my boys. The long “mop” on their heads (as Tommy termed it) will be clipped. Obviously this isn’t the first time this has happened. But Tommy’s wild hair and Louie’s flippy curls just get me.

Tommy was much more willing to let me document his Mop, Lou however hid for 20 some shots before I nabbed one. Mainly I just wanted that flippy little curl on the left side above his ear.

Done.

Mops be gone.

Then when she told me her daughter dressed them up in Barbie gear, I knew I would be taking photos.

This might have been the most fun I’ve had taking photos of chicks yet! It’s so ridiculous and cute all at the same time!

Let me introduce to you, Peep Lembo.

In “chick” roller derby this would be the alter ego of Ball State’s football coach, Pete Lembo.

If only I had a mini shower cap this would have been beyond perfect.

(Murse used up all the fresh eggs that morning. So I ran outside to find two more fresh ones waiting to be used for the shoot! Another bonus to chickens!)

The other day, Murse headed to the local Rural King to grab a few supplies for chicken coop 2.0. I received a text telling me it was officially Chick Days and they have SILKIES! I’ve been pretty adamant that as much as I love the look of those Silkies, we would not be getting any more chickens until our three current ones … well, died.

I then made the mistake of agreeing to a family trip last Friday to just “see” the chicks. What harm could that be?

And then I picked one up.

And she was so tiny and sweet.

But still I never thought we’d leave there with two more chicks.

But the silkies, the silkies. Those awkward, fluffy-footed silkies … I couldn’t resist any longer. The kids were begging, Murse was eye-balling me … I caved. And of course she needed a friend and by that time Tommy had attached himself to a little Rhode Island Red that fell asleep in his hand for a moment.

And the rest is history.

Here we go again.

The Rhode Island Red‘s name is Peep (the gold one on my hand above). She has calmed down since the first night, but holy cow was she loud. She was like a lost little soul looking for her sisters. And Bruce, the black Silkie with her more tempered personality by nature seemed unphased. Peep would only stop peeping if we sat and talked to her or held her. When she fell asleep in my hands, she won me over.

Yesterday they had their first experience out of the bin and into the living room where I set up all sorts of cute little props for them to play on.

I started with Bruce. She was very puzzled and let me snap a few pics off before she peeped the loudest I’d heard her peep yet.

As soon as Peep peeped back, Bruce found her friend and headed straight for the bin.

This was actually really encouraging for me since I wasn’t sure if they were really going to act like sisters since they aren’t the same breed. I was glad to see they needed each other. One of the things I love most about my Buff Orpingtons is that they are always together. I hope these two fit in okay once that time comes!

So after that I brought them both out. Peep wanted nothing to do with the white foam board, but they both did okay for a tiny bit on the blankets (never to be used in newborn sessions, FYI) ;o)

But once they discovered the carpet it was all over.

(Sweet fuzzy chicken butt.)And then they made their way to my legs where I spent the rest of the time doing crunches (not kidding, it was a real workout). At this point I couldn’t really worry about the surroundings. It was just me and the chicks.

And then they took turns falling asleep on my leg. I think they like me.

She’s a Silkie Bantam. If you would like to see how awesome she’s going to look when she grows up, then click on over to see a grown up version of a Black Silkie. I think they look like Muppets!

One thing I love about Bruce is that she’s a bit gawky. She’s got longer legs, floppy feet and a lot of beautiful fluff around her long neck. She reminds me of a llama. She’s beautiful :o)

I have plenty more where this came from, but I couldn’t resist posting one before I post the rest. Because really, who can resist baby chick pics? Not me!

He has been saving his money for many, many months to purchase the set of 43 Magic Tree House books through his classroom’s book order.

Never mind that he got a Kindle Fire for Christmas and continually devours each book we get digitally from the Muncie library—for free. My child has a collector’s soul … and I blame both sets of grandparents for this :o) He wants, in his hand, forever to keep, the whole series of Magic Tree House. And so determined to save, he got them.

When he brought them home from school he immediately spread them out on the the floor and devised a system of organization that is best understood by him alone.

After that hierarchy was finished he then spent much of Saturday organizing and reorganizing them on his bookshelf.

He finally settled on a system that I think involves reading skill level. You will have to ask him. In fact, he would love that. He says he really needs people to borrow books from his library. He told me tonight he was going out of business because no one is borrowing books. I headed over and asked if he could help me find the one about Leonardo da Vinci, and not surprising, he knew right were it was. I have checked out my first book from Louie’s library. I feel honored.

And while I’m on the topic of my youngest (and because his bed is actually made), I thought I’d show off his latest artwork: uniquely designed football jerseys.

(Also please note the Ticket to Ride type map he and Tommy have been working on with the dry-erase marker)

Murse and I, we have dreams on the horizon.—maybe becoming a reality sooner than we thought. We surely have our friend Andrea to thank for this as we received a document in our inbox today entitled, “My imagined timeline for your life.” It basically roadmaps our next 6 years. No big deal. I’ll share details as it happens (just in case it doesn’t :o) But I’m pretty sure if the whole ro.fam gets their daily Pep Talk from Kid President all things are possible!

“You got a heartbeat. That means it’s time to do something.”

I think we all need a pep talk.

The world needs you so stop being boring. Ya—you! Boring is easy! Everybody can be boring. But you’re gooder than that.

Life is not a game people. Life isn’t a cereal either. Well, it is a cereal. And if life is a game, aren’t we all on the same team? I mean really, right? I’m on your team, you’re on my team. This is life people! You got air coming through your nose. You got a heartbeat. That means it’s time to do something.

A poem: Two roads diverged in the woods … and I took the road less traveled. AND IT HURT, MAN! Really bad. ROCKS! THORNS! And GLASS! … NOT COOL ROBERT FROST!

But what if there really were two paths. I want to be on the one that leads to awesome. It’s like that dude Journey said: Don’t stop believing … unless your dream is stupid. Then you should get a better dream. I think that’s how it goes. Get a better dream and keep going, keep going, keep going and keep going.

What if Michael Jordan had quit? Well he did quit. No, he retired, ya that’s it, he retired. But before that, in high school, what if he had quit when he didn’t make the team? He would have never made Space Jam, and I love Space Jam. What will be your Space Jam? What will you create that will make the world awesome? Nothing if you keep sitting there. That’s why I’m talking to you today. This is your time. This is my time. It’s our time.

We can make everyday better for each other. If we’re all on the same team let’s start acting like it. We got work to do. We can cry about it or we can dance about it.

We were made to be awesome.

Lets get out there.

I don’t know everything, I’m just a kid. But I do know this: it’s everybody’s duty to give the world a reason to dance. So get to it.

You’ve just been pep talked. Create something that will make the world awesome.
