My babies are growing up.

At 3 weeks they are now starting to enter the awkward adolescent stage. They’re sprouting feathers and losing precious yellow fluff. But the best part is, they know their mama.

Today was their first adventure outdoors. You know the saying “crazy cat woman”? Well, I felt like the “crazy bird woman” as they hopped all around and on me. I have to admit, I thought at any moment a huge hawk was going to swoop in and grab them.

Furball is most affectionate (as a chicken can be) towards me. She is the one to most often hang out closest to me, perch herself on my arm … and even doze off while there.

How can you tell them apart?

Good question. It’s getting harder and harder too. Furball is still the smallest and has the least feathers, but not by much. Skittles has always been the loudest and biggest, but Sleepy Head is gaining ground, and I can’t always tell those two apart. I’m interested to see when they are full grown if there are more distinctions between them.

When will they stop living in that plastic storage bin in your bathroom?

Mark is finishing up their deluxe chicken coop and probably in the next couple weeks we’ll move them outdoors. I can tell you right now, I’m not going to be real excited about this. They’re still so little! So we’ll see :o)

(I think she is going to have to be renamed Beaker in honor of The Muppets)

{Furball}

I need some time to journal about my babies before I post all my favorites from our little photo shoot today.

Babies? Yep. I’m the proud owner of three baby chicklets. Three Orpingtons to be exact.

I never in a million years thought I’d have a chicken as a pet. Let alone three of them.

And I never in a million years thought I’d be so enamored by each one.

Their sweet little peeps. The way they fall asleep at random moments, sometimes standing up not realizing it until their tiny head nods and their beak taps the ground.

The way they all snuggle into each other, vying for the best cozy spot, but in the end heads all resting on their sisters’ backs.

The way they cock their head and listen intently when we talk with them.

The way they are growing to trust us as we hold them.

The way Tommy and Louie hold them close and kiss them on their heads.

Yep. I’m in love.

Most of you never pegged me as the urban farmer type. Nor the pet type. I am allergic to most of them which is what makes having chickens so extra special. You can’t cuddle a fish. However you might also be unaware of the zillion and one pets I had as a kid: Digger, Cuddles, Breezy, Munchie (and those are only the names of the ones I remember) were my hamsters throughout the years (Squiggy was Mark and my first child); Moses, Bluewing I and Bluewing II (very original I know) were the birds; Squeaky was my guinea pig; and Norman was the baby rabbit we saved. I was very allergic to the former two. There were a slew of fish: Frederick and Mabel being my most memorable. And of course the dogs Tippy and Nick. And now here we are adding Furball, Sleepy Head and Skittles (names may be temporary) to the long lineage of pets. Have I convinced you that I’m a pet lover yet? I just take my quotas in moderated doses.

We love the book, Chick Days by Jenna Woginrich. Highly recommend it if you are wanting some chickens as a pet for yourself :o)

The last two Saturdays I’ve claimed the Gibson Skating Arena’s entryway as my studio so we can show the world how awesome Muncie’s Cornfed Derby Dames’ roller derby team is.

I’m not kidding when I say there was not one unphotogenic Dame in the bunch. Well, except for me. And I’m not kidding when I say that either. I’m okay with being the one behind the camera.

However, a few of my Dames chose spice it up a bit.

These were my spiced-up favorites.

Have I mentioned April 15th is our home opener? You’ll wanna be there for sure!

derby refs be cute | muncie, indiana photography

It’s safe to say I’ve had a doozy of a week: Concussion recovery, house break-in, sleep deprivation, strep for the youngest which seems to be spreading to the rest of us.

I’m really, really looking forward to a healthy home and being able to lace up my skates again.

In the meantime, these photos make me happy.

Karen (aka Karen Bout-cha) and Amanda (aka SLAMbot) are two Cornfed Derby Dames skaters turned referee. I think we’re pretty darned lucky to have two beautiful BA refs on our side (but of course unbiased during a bout :o)

I realize that I don’t blog a whole lot about roller derby on this site, even though it’s a HUGE part of my life. So maybe that will change this season. Not sure what roller derby is all about? You can catch our first home bout this season Sunday, April 15! And since it’s just a couple days after my birthday, I’m claiming it as my birthday party, and you’re all invited! More details to come!

Squirrely Inheritance

You know how as you grow older you begin to either become more and more like your parents–or you become more aware that you were like them all along? One of these attributes for me is the ability to squirrel away medicine in our kitchen cabinets.

Now, I’d like to think that at this stage I am not nearly as squirrely as my mom was. I remember Mark and I one time helping her clean and organize her kitchen cabinets. We found droves (and I don’t use that term lightly) of vitamins, prescription bottles, loose pills–stuffed in random places, on random shelves, in random cabinets. However, give me a few years without any intervention, and it may just come to that.

Thankfully it drives Mark crazy, so hopefully I’ll never make it to that point. However, he does see the value (for the most part) of stashing away your daily does of vitamins and daily used meds in the kitchen where you are most likely to see them in the morning. Because of this I have claimed a very tiny, small, almost obsolete corner of one of our pantry shelves. Admittedly, bottles get scattered–and they also make their way to the counter top, especially when it’s time to refill my weekly pill organizer (which usually takes me 2 weeks to get to and secretly hope Mark–aka Murse–will just get tired of looking at it and do it for me).

So with all the above said, I was so proud of my man when he came up with this easy way to organize the ro.fam drugs.

Now if only he could figure out a way to automatically refill my pill organizer.

I’m getting a lot of use out of these photos! Just add some hearts and BAM – Christmas is now Valentine’s Day.

I loved this one so much. It says, “I can’t believe my mom stamped hearts all over my photo!” But he nixed it.

And went for the SLAM DUNK instead :o)

Muncie’s Best Exhibit | Minnetrista

Full disclosure: Minnestrista does pay me to design, but they are not paying me extra for this endorsement :o)

I’m not exaggerating when I say that if you have kiddos, this is the best thing going on in Muncie right now. And unfortunately it ends on the 12th. So if you haven’t been to Casey’s Clubhouse Art Studio at Minnetrista, you better high-tail it over there before it’s gone.

Why? Because your kids can drag out all the paint and use every paint brush on hand and cut and paste and make a big mess — and you don’t have to worry about your carpet getting dirty … or best of all, cleaning it up!

Plus, if you’re like me, it gives you a creative outlet too!

At one time I saw that BSU art students would be at the studio from noon-4 p.m. this Saturday teaching the kids about Expressionism art. I can’t for the life of me find where I saw that, so I’m not 100% sure it’s still happening. Even if it’s not, you have the full studio to get crazy with art.

Today, Saturday and Sunday are your last days — so get to it already!
