Squirrely Inheritance

You know how as you grow older you begin to either become more and more like your parents–or you become more aware that you were like them all along? One of these attributes for me is the ability to squirrel away medicine in our kitchen cabinets.

Now, I’d like to think that at this stage I am not nearly as squirrely as my mom was. I remember Mark and I one time helping her clean and organize her kitchen cabinets. We found droves (and I don’t use that term lightly) of vitamins, prescription bottles, loose pills–stuffed in random places, on random shelves, in random cabinets. However, give me a few years without any intervention, and it may just come to that.

Thankfully it drives Mark crazy, so hopefully I’ll never make it to that point. However, he does see the value (for the most part) of stashing away your daily does of vitamins and daily used meds in the kitchen where you are most likely to see them in the morning. Because of this I have claimed a very tiny, small, almost obsolete corner of one of our pantry shelves. Admittedly, bottles get scattered–and they also make their way to the counter top, especially when it’s time to refill my weekly pill organizer (which usually takes me 2 weeks to get to and secretly hope Mark–aka Murse–will just get tired of looking at it and do it for me).

So with all the above said, I was so proud of my man when he came up with this easy way to organize the ro.fam drugs.

Now if only he could figure out a way to automatically refill my pill organizer.

I’m getting a lot of use out of these photos! Just add some hearts and BAM – Christmas is now Valentine’s Day.

I loved this one so much. It says, “I can’t believe my mom stamped hearts all over my photo!” But he nixed it.

And went for the SLAM DUNK instead :o)

Muncie’s Best Exhibit | Minnetrista

Full disclosure: Minnestrista does pay me to design, but they are not paying me extra for this endorsement :o)

I’m not exaggerating when I say that if you have kiddos, this is the best thing going on in Muncie right now. And unfortunately it ends on the 12th. So if you haven’t been to Casey’s Clubhouse Art Studio at Minnetrista, you better high-tail it over there before it’s gone.

Why? Because your kids can drag out all the paint and use every paint brush on hand and cut and paste and make a big mess — and you don’t have to worry about your carpet getting dirty … or best of all, cleaning it up!

Plus, if you’re like me, it gives you a creative outlet too!

At one time I saw that BSU art students would be at the studio from noon-4 p.m. this Saturday teaching the kids about Expressionism art. I can’t for the life of me find where I saw that, so I’m not 100% sure it’s still happening. Even if it’s not, you have the full studio to get crazy with art.

Today, Saturday and Sunday are your last days — so get to it already!

In September I took a moment to pay attention to the details of my beloved guitar. You may remember a post I wrote at that time. Today I’m going to share the rest of the story.

I have very distinct memories of being cozy in my pjs on my mom and dad’s ginormous king size bed, sitting next to my daddy while he sang this song to me.

I’m sure there were many others, but that’s the one I remember the most. And whenever this memory comes to me, I picture myself wearing this exact same nightie.

I was actually surprised I didn’t find a series of similar photos with my dad right next to me playing his guitar.

The Gibby did have an unfortunate accident sometime during my brother’s crazy middle school days and the neck broke. I’ve only had to have it fixed one other time, but it still makes me a bit nervous. I still play occasionally. I would love for my kids to have similar memories of them in their pjs in the middle of our bed singing along to the tune of my gibby.

happy birthday j.ro photography!

You know how in the Shire when it’s your birthday you give gifts to your guests? (If you have no idea what I’m talking about then you’re missing an epic tale that you might want to strongly consider discovering). Well, this year I’m celebrating Hobbit-Style and here is my gift to you!

And with my 5th year in business I’ve also taken the opportunity to head back to an office space. After 9 years with a combo of freelancing graphic design work and starting my photography business from my own home I’ve gone back. I am getting paid to design again, as I will be one of the designers at our local cultural center, Minnetrista. If you ask why I’m doing this, I don’t have real great answer. But I know at this exact season, it’s a good thing. So I’ll just stick with that for now. No worries photography lovers. Photography is my first love and it’s here to stay.

It was strange and fun pulling my portfolio together, but in the end I really liked what I came up with. A little suitcase to hold my samples.

4 days young | bloomington, indiana newborn photographer

My friend Joanne has the best smile in the world, gives some of the best “you-know-you’re-loved” hugs ever and always, always, always sends encouragement and love my way. She’s like a little angel that I’d love to keep with me all the times. Thankfully I can give back to her in the way of photographs. Her man Dave has an amazing sense of humor and together they make the perfect couple. Combine them with their first cutie Drew and now their second cutie Will and you have a family knit beautifully together with lots of hugs and laughter!

So welcome sweet little, 4-day-old Will. (4 DAYS!) You are so loved, and I am so blessed to have you in front of my lens.

Drew gave me .5 seconds to take his photo. I was amazed I ended up with this one!

And then for a split second at the very end (after I had packed my camera away of course), Drew decided he wanted to lay down next to his baby brother. It really was a split second. And even though this is all that came of it, I’m happy ;o)

It snowed yesterday. At least where I was. It was wonderfully, thick and sloppy and sticky … and beautiful.

We had fun making a mini photobooth out of my living room. We just duck-taped wrapping paper to the ceiling, made ourselves some fun Christmas props, snapped the camera to the tripod and made magic happen.

happy birthday tommy ro!

This time, 9 years ago, I was in my living room in my yellow house on Marsh St with a group of friends who I still know and love to this day. We were watching The Fellowship of the Ring to prep for the newest installment of the LOTR trilogy, The Two Towers, that was about to hit the theaters. My belly was humongous (understatement). I could not see my feet. And I had a tiny body inside of me that would often get the hiccups and kick me in the ribs. My due date was December 25th. As it turns out Baby Ro had other plans.

After all my friends left and Mark went to bed, I stayed up to pace the living room floor in hopes of walking off these tiny pains that had been shooting through my sides all day. An hour later, I was pretty convinced these were “the” pains, and I went to wake up Mark. He startled awake, saying, “Wha, Oh, I’m coming. I’ll be right there.” I head back to the living room and Mark falls soundly back asleep ;o) No joke.

I figure I can endure this on my own for a bit more and that I will let him sleep since it’s likely to be a long night.

30 mintues later I am now crawling on my hands and knees to the edge of the bed making sure this time that Mark actually stays awake.

It’s game time.

And here we are, 9 years later. 9!

Tonight during bedtime, I told Tommy this story again which he always thinks is hilarious. It’s also a bonus that he, too, likes the Lord of the Rings (maybe watching it that night destined him to it). And then I told him how we called him Baby Ro when he was in my belly and then just called him Ro-Ro for a good few weeks after he was born. It wasn’t until Jeff Smith started calling him Tommy that I thought, I really like that. He’s old enough to be a Tommy now ;o) When I told Tommy this, he said, “I like that Jeff Smith.” Then we speculated what life would have been like if we would have just name him Ro-Ro. We cracked up in bed as we talked about how he would introduce himself, ” Hi, I’m Ro-Ro Rohlfing and my initials are RRRrrrrrr (with a pirate accent of course!)” Sometimes I’m just too funny!

Then we talked about all the awesome things I love about him. How confident he is. How compassionate and considerate he is. How adventurous he is (“I think I’m only 50% adventurous,” he says). And that’s why we also talked about how it’s great to have balance in life. We can’t always be adventurous. That the great thing about being human is that we can’t always be these things, that we’re allowed to fail, and we will fail, and that most of all I still love him when he does fail. But mainly we talked about how awesome he is!

Happy birthday my handsome (he would blush if he knew I wrote that), talented, reader-loving, lego-engineering, math-fact mashing, football-loving, super star!

I love you with all my heart!
